How to Use the Flow System

Master Flow Stance, directional Flow techniques, and movement-centric combat in Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game.

The Flow System defines Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game's combat identity. Where other fighters reward holding back to block, Avatar Legends rewards active defense through Flow Stance and aggressive repositioning through directional techniques. This guide teaches Flow fundamentals through the official gameplay overview video and structured practice drills.

Flow Stance Basics

Hold the Flow button to enter stance. Your character automatically defends while Chi drains from your Chi Gauge. Release to act normally. Flow Stance is not a commitment—tap it briefly to defend single hits, or hold it through pressure strings at the risk of Chi depletion. Read the full Flow System wiki page for advanced mechanics.

Directional Flow Techniques

While holding Flow, press directional inputs for character-specific techniques. Forward techniques often dash or glide toward opponents. Backward techniques create space. Down techniques may duck under highs or enhance low attacks. Up techniques enable aerial routes for characters like Aang and Zaheer. Practice all four directions in Training Mode until muscle memory forms.

Flow Cancel Combos

Advanced Flow usage involves canceling attacks into Flow techniques and chaining Flow techniques together. Command normals cancel into Flow, and some Flow techniques cancel into other Flow moves. These routes create the extended combos shown in alpha footage. Start with simple two-hit cancels before attempting full combo strings documented on character pages.

Flow and Support Synergies

Support characters modify Flow behavior. Before each match, choose a support that complements your Flow playstyle. Use the Support Picker to preview combinations. The support selection guide covers optimal pairings.

Practice Drill

Training Mode drill: Set dummy to "Always Attack." Practice Flow Stance timing for 5 minutes. Then practice each directional technique 10 times per side. Finally, attempt one Flow cancel combo from your character's movelist. Repeat daily until Flow feels natural before attempting online play in the July beta.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I use Flow Stance?
Use Flow Stance when expecting an incoming attack, especially during opponent pressure strings. Avoid holding it indefinitely—Chi depletes quickly under sustained offense.
Can Flow techniques be used offensively?
Yes. Directional Flow techniques enable approach, cross-ups, and combo extensions. Many advanced routes cancel normals into Flow for extended damage.
Does every character have the same Flow moves?
No. Each character has unique directional Flow techniques reflecting their bending style. Aang glides, Toph burrows, and Zaheer flies—check your character page for specifics.
